Some freelancers stumble into the world of independent work. Others build their careers around it from the very beginning. For this week’s spotlight, we’re featuring a freelancer who has been doing exactly that for nearly three decades.
Meet Darrin. Originally from Massachusetts, this digital marketing strategist has built a career that spans continents, industries, and hundreds of successful projects. With more than 28 years of experience in digital marketing, web development, and growth strategy, he specializes in helping businesses turn visibility into revenue through full-funnel marketing systems, automation, and data-driven strategy.
I was born and raised in Massachusetts, but I’ve always had a global mindset. My journey has taken me across continents—from living in Melbourne, Australia, and Japan to spending time in Miami, South Carolina, and Pennsylvania. I consider myself a world citizen—curious, adaptive, and constantly evolving.
What do I do for fun? I build businesses. That may sound unusual, but creating, launching, and scaling ventures is my version of play. Whether it’s crafting marketing systems, designing brands, or testing new funnels—I find joy in translating ideas into income.
Currently, I’m merging my passion for fitness with entrepreneurship. I’m building a health brand from scratch—tracking my workouts, documenting results, and using my own digital marketing systems to grow the brand online. This isn’t just a hobby—it’s a live case study to show clients how I execute strategies in real time. My fun is rooted in purpose and progress—and I believe that’s what makes me different.
At my core, I help businesses unlock new leads, amplify their visibility, and convert attention into revenue. I’ve been doing this for over 28 years through a unique blend of digital strategy, automation, and performance marketing.
Think of me as your on-demand Chief Marketing Officer. I specialize in full-funnel growth strategies—from SEO to AI-powered content marketing to advanced analytics and PPC execution. I don’t just implement tactics—I architect the entire system that drives predictable growth.
Here’s a closer look at my primary skills:
These aren’t just services—they’re solutions. I help companies move from revenue plateaus to performance breakthroughs by identifying marketing leaks, building systems, and then scaling what works.
I’ve been freelancing for over 28 years, before freelancing was even considered a mainstream path. My journey started during college when I was part of the INROADS program, where the Mission of INROADS is to place talented minority youth & place them in business & industry to prepare them for corporate & community leadership. I landed a summer internship at the #1 supermarket company in New England, Stop & Shop Supermarket, in their corporate offices. It was here I developed a complex data analysis system for the executive team.
When summer ended and I returned to college, I realized no one at the company knew how to continue the work I had created. That was my first business opportunity. I pitched a remote freelance arrangement to the executive team, offering continuity, results, and cost savings. They agreed. That decision allowed me to support a corporate-level project while attending college full-time from my dorm room.
That one pitch taught me everything: value creation, independence, problem-solving, and how to build business relationships from scratch. I’ve been freelancing and consulting ever since, building digital marketing systems, scaling online brands, and launching businesses of my own along the way.
I’ve built my business by staying ahead of the curve and positioning myself not just as a service provider—but as a strategic growth partner. I started with web development and SEO, moved into funnel building and copywriting, and eventually evolved into providing full-service lead generation and marketing automation systems.
Today, I run a digital consultancy that helps brands grow through SEO, paid media, automation, and analytics. I’ve built and sold over 450 websites. I’ve managed multi-channel ad campaigns, created full inbound marketing systems, and designed proprietary lead gen frameworks powered by AI.
Platforms like FreeUp have been instrumental in scaling this business. Unlike traditional marketplaces, FreeUp is efficient, agile, and filled with action-ready clients who know what they want. It cuts the noise and gets right to the core, solving problems and delivering results.
I also take an educator’s approach with my clients. Many don’t know what’s possible or what’s missing in their systems. I break down the landscape, identify gaps, and give them a roadmap with options. That transparency builds trust—and that’s what grows businesses.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned over nearly three decades of freelancing is this: adaptability wins.
Markets change. Technology evolves. Client expectations shift. The only way to stay relevant is to continually study the landscape, learn emerging tools, and refine your systems to deliver faster, smarter, and better.
One of the most impactful changes I’ve made is leveraging AI and automation across my service delivery. From content creation to SEO audits and campaign reporting, I now integrate intelligent systems that help clients scale with less manual effort. This has enabled me to offer productized services that deliver enterprise-level results, whether the client is a startup or a 7-figure brand.
Another key learning point: communication must be proactive and systemized. I’ve replaced most status meetings with personalized video walkthroughs using Loom or YouTube. Clients appreciate the transparency and clarity, while I eliminate time-draining, back-and-forth meetings. That’s a win on both sides.
Freelancing isn’t just about skills, it’s about building repeatable systems, staying ahead of change, and always delivering more value than expected.
FreeUp stands out because it’s built for results, not just resumes.
On other platforms, it often feels like a race to the bottom, a bidding war that rewards the cheapest offer instead of the most qualified expert. That’s not how serious businesses grow.
With FreeUp, I’m connected to clients who are ready to execute. They have a clear need, a vetted project, and a sense of urgency. That alignment means less time pitching, and more time solving real problems.
Another major difference? Longevity. Most of my FreeUp clients stay for years. They grow with me, and I grow with them. That’s a testament to the platform’s ability to attract high-caliber businesses looking for real partnerships, not quick fixes.
For digital marketing professionals like me, who treat freelancing like a business—not a gig—FreeUp is the ideal ecosystem.
The single greatest key to client success in digital marketing and SEO? Systemization.
You can’t scale chaos. That’s why I help clients set up predictable frameworks, whether it’s a lead generation engine, a sales funnel, or a Google Ads campaign with automated reporting tied to real business KPIs.
Here’s the truth: most clients come to me because they’re stuck. They’ve tried ad hoc marketing tactics that didn’t scale. They have fragmented data and disconnected campaigns. I step in to architect the system—from strategy to execution to optimization.
When a client has the right digital infrastructure, automation flows, and content aligned with intent, they win. My mission is to help them implement that structure so they’re not just running campaigns, they’re running a business that grows. Regardless if it’s a small SEO keyword research project, or implementing a copywriting and content generation campaign to build their brand authority, I build systems and solutions to deliver quality results.
In today’s world, attention is currency. Systemized marketing gives you control over that currency.
My goal during every initial interview is to uncover three things:
To do that, I ask questions that go beyond the task. For example:
I also request immediate access to key tools (e.g., WordPress, GA4, search console, ad accounts) so I can begin work quickly, often within 24 hours.
By approaching onboarding with a systems mindset, I help clients move from conversation to execution extremely fast, often faster than they expect.
There are three pillars to thriving on FreeUp, or in any freelance business: Communication, Systemization, and Skill Expansion
1. Communicate like a pro.
Clients don’t just hire freelancers, they invest in confidence of solutions. That means being responsive, clear, and proactive from day one. Set expectations early. Over-communicate progress. Anticipate questions before they’re asked. Use tools like Loom, Google Sheets & Google Docs, to present your ideas visually. When you communicate like a strategist, not just a doer, you gain trust, authority, and repeat business.
2. Build systems, not stress.
Every deliverable should be tied to a repeatable framework. From onboarding to reporting to delivery, create systems that eliminate chaos. This not only improves the client experience but also frees up your mental bandwidth to take on more high-level projects, or build your own ventures in parallel.
3. Evolve or be eliminated.
Technology, AI, and platforms are moving fast. The freelancers who survive and thrive are the ones who learn faster than the marketplace evolves. Invest in courses, experiment with new tools, and productize your services. Stay sharp, stay curious, and stay indispensable.
Finally, don’t just work in your business, work on it. Brand yourself. Share your wins. Become known for a signature service or framework. The freelancers who rise to the top are the ones who treat freelancing like the business it truly is. That’s what I’m aiming to do at least.
One of my most rewarding projects was working with a brand in the office accessories and furniture niche that sold primarily on Amazon.
While they had decent traction on Amazon, their DTC brand was struggling with visibility, engagement, and authority.
I stepped in to lead their entire digital transformation—starting with an SEO strategy, then managing the full redesign of their WordPress website, and finally implementing a complete organic growth engine across content, email, and social.
Within 90 days:
This wasn’t just a “marketing win”, it was a brand transformation. What started as a short-term project evolved into a growth blueprint that elevated them nationally. That’s the kind of impact I aim for with every client.
