Meet Kate, a multi-talented content creator who proves that freelancing is about more than just delivering work — it’s about creating meaningful connections and empowering others. From gaming content to SEO strategy and client management, Kate has built a thriving career by continuously learning and adapting.
Her story is one of growth, creativity, and the joy of helping clients succeed through her words and insights. Keep reading to learn more about this dynamic freelance writer.
Who am I? As a writer, you would think that answering questions like this would be easy, but it’s actually more of a challenge to write about myself!
I’m from Ohio (kinda). I have spent my life in many different places but a significant number of years were in Ohio. Today, as a freelancer I get the joy of traveling with the seasons and avoiding the cold!
You’ll find me in many different places throughout the year with my computer at a coffee shop. I love traveling and exploring new places and foods! When I’m not traveling, I enjoy creating things.
If I’m not doing any of the above, you’ll often find me with my nose stuck in a book!
I define myself as a content creator. I dabble in many different skillsets but when it comes down to it, I’m a writer. I love the concept of educating and teaching people and I believe that the best way I can do that is through the words I use.
My initial career path was very different though. I have a bachelor’s degree from Wright State University in rehabilitation services.
After completing my bachelors degree I continued my education in a masters degree program for Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling. During that time I worked for children services and as a family centered specialist. However, during that time (around six years ago) I took on my first “side gig.”
I started my freelance journey in the gaming industry. For close to 5 years I created strategy articles and the occasional YouTube video for mobile gamers. I also managed those communities and provided feedback to game developers to help them improve the games.
Eventually, this role grew so much that I was able to do it full-time. I then moved into freelancing for The Hoth writing SEO content, creating blog topics, and QCing the work of other writers.
Once I left the gaming industry I was able to grow in that role and expand my skills to writing content for infographics, writing press releases, and writing copy for websites.
Today, I’ve taken on more roles including but not limited to:
All of this experience has allowed me to grow my knowledge in multiple areas. This is how I’ve grown as a freelancer and in the services I’m able to offer! I’m constantly seeking to learn and grow and build new skills.
If you were to look at the first gaming article I ever wrote, you would not want to hire me. I had no clue what I was doing. I was combining a fun hobby (gaming) with something I enjoyed doing, but had never done professionally (writing).
The content I create today is much different than the content I created back then. There are several lessons I’ve learned through my past career and my freelancing career that have helped me. It may have taken me a few years to define these concepts, but here’s what I have for you!
As an account manager here, I may be a bit biased. However, I prefer to think that I just have a closer look! I love the culture here.
FreeUp supports the clients we work with, but they also support the freelancers. They believe in the freelancers on the platform so much that they hire them as well. They also encourage growth and learning and care about you as a person.
You may see things about all of this on the website, but I’m here to tell you, it’s not just lip service. FreeUp practices what they preach and it makes me very proud to be a part of this team.
Success comes back to attention to detail and being willing to listen to feedback. Paying attention to details helps me ensure that I do my very best work (even if I can get slightly hypercritical of myself sometimes). It also allows me to focus on that client’s branding so I’m not just creating cookie cutter content for them.
Being willing to listen to feedback allows me to create something my clients love and are proud to use for their business. Ultimately, you need to be flexible.
You also need to remember that feedback doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. What you’re doing might be perfect for another client. It just isn’t right for the current client.
I like to ask about the client’s business and their purpose. I love hearing why people do what they do and it’s a great way to start to get to know them and their needs. I also like asking about deadlines, communication, and feedback. This helps me know what they need from me.
Success for me looks a little different than most people. For me, success means that I did something to help someone or make their life easier. When that happens, it sets my clients up for success. With that said, I have two examples of success I’ll post.
Kate’s journey is a testament to the power of growth, adaptability, and delivering work with heart. Her insights on the importance of feedback, attention to detail, and building meaningful client connections offer valuable lessons for anyone working in the freelance space.
